Myrdød—a pseudoword that melds the Norwegian translation for swamp and death. It’s the perfect description for harsh, gnarled music borne from the shadowy marshes of rural Pennsylvania.
Originally formed as a solo project by imposing woodland hermit Søppelskaler, Myrdød’s blackened death screamed out of the void in late 2020. Within a year of that first offering, the project released a fistful of raw demos and EPs possessed by the spirit of raw black metal. Once the project welcomed Fractal Creature as a collaborator, the band’s vision narrowed like an owl’s eyes while descending upon prey. Now Myrdød will conclude their dizzying 2021 with The Mourning Hollow, a return to the project’s cosmic vortex of low-tuned and suffocating death.
“The album was recorded in a small cabin in the woods of Pennsylvania, with sounds of serene waters and animals screeching in the night,” Søppelskaler shares. “It’s environmental, ritualistic, and inspired by the relentless music that we both love. We are metal fans paying tribute to our favorite bands in our own voice.”
Fractal has called the project “astral travel terrors,” which captures the dark psychedelia swirling through the black/death density. Think bands like Abyssal, Ævangelist, Teitanblood, and Void Meditation Cult. Or picture black metal of both Norwegian and US strains deformed by the hostile fungus of death metal. But amid the unforgiving heaviness there’s reverence for nature, darkness, and the lawless wilderness of the human psyche. The Mourning Hollow’s art was conceived before the songs were even written, bestowing a visual identity to the album’s dusky epics.
“What the lyrics say with language, the album art depicts in essence,” Søppelskaler explains. “We honor plants and animals, ponder our human experience through grim rituals, awaken to the spiral between birth and death of all things. The Mourning Hollow is a place of solace for the wounded.”
“I had very vivid meditations of the [cover] drawing,” Fractal adds. “Particularly: mouldering castle stone deep in a forest clearing, two shrouded figures weeping, curious animals. The viewer almost peering at the scene through a spider’s web. I saw this on the blank paper for months before I began drawing.”
Propelled by dark visions and a restless DIY spirit, Myrdød release The Mourning Hollow on December 17th. Wise Blood Records will handle the digital, CD, and cassette formats. Venture into the misty woods with Myrdød, gaze inward, and surrender to the void.

I've gotten myself into GR by first getting their last album, then decided to give this one a go too. Atoms divide, life decays, seems we are into nuclear explosions here, that is how GR feels, a powerful and fast blitz and stormy riffs and groovy hardcorish - thrashy blasts. Highly recommended for all thrash lovers out there. Toxic Holocaust does come in mind, true that, Wraith, Municipal Waste fans should love this ! sachavonkarl74
